{Lavish} Tuesday Treats

I was thinking about what I wanted to add to my spring wardrobe today, and contently settled on the goal to incorporate more well-made, flattering, solid-colored pieces into my wardrobe that will allow me more freedom to mix and match. So naturally, during my nightly online shopping peruse, these items grabbed my attention and would not let go. Lavish, bold, over-the-top- call them what you will, but exquisite is something none of us can argue.

Fabulous Friday Finds

Friday is finally here, and to send you on your merry way, a few fabulous finds I stumbled across this week that I hope to get my hands on/try my hand with.

Lovely little Valentines Day cards, that just may be appropriate for a little shin-dig my PIC and I are planning for February 14th:

Two words: edible glitter. We've seen it done a million times to make the plainest of dishes pretty, but for those of you who can't find edible glitter in your local grocery or craft store, you're in luck!

Superbowl XLVI (I googled that)

(Warning: this post is written with lots of sarcasm)
Let's make one thing real clear: I don't care about the Superbowl.
I am from the South. There is one type of football I care anything about. And that is the SEC. I do not care about the NFL. I do not even know who is playing against the Giants in the Superbowl. And the only reason I know the Giants are even in the Superbowl is because Eli Manning plays for the Giants, and he went to my beloved Ole Miss (and I love him).

Now that that's all cleared up, I can go straight to what I've been preparing for today.
Superbowl Sunday.
Clearly, this could be confusing to you, since I don't care about the NFL. But I do care about parties. And entertaining. And lots of yummy dips and treats that have more calories than I'll consume in a normal week. But hey, it's the Superbowl y'all- carpe diem.
So, moving on. I'm currently trying to decide between these recipes to contribute to the infamous Superbowl Sunday party. Before deciding, there are three factors one should consider when choosing a Superbowl dish. They are:

Don't take something that has to be heated up to often. The men (who are actually watching the game) will complain quickly and often when it gets cold, and you'll be stuck making endless trips to the microwave or oven to re-heat the dish, (which is most likely a dip).
Don't take something too girly. Take something guys will like. Sure, I super want to make these adorable football-shaped and decorated chocolate cookies. But chances are, approximately one third of the guys there will actually pick one up and eat them. Alas, all your hard work done with no appreciation. Other things that will not be eaten or appreciated are foods that are deemed "healthy". Watch out.
Lastly, this is probably the most important rule of Superbowl food prepartion. Do not, I repeat, DO. NOT. Bring anything that utensils must be used to eat. Utensils should be used with a utensil dish for a reason, right? But guys will use their hands. As if that isn't disgusting enough, throw in all the "excitement" of what's happening in the game, and you have one big 'ole mess.

So, all things considered, here are my top picks for dishes to bring to Superbowl Sunday parties, all tried-and-true tested on guys and that have passed all three of the above tests. You are welcome, in advance.

Loaded baked potato dip- serve with fries optional. Yep.

Pizza dip- be careful of the re-heat rule #1 on this one, but I just love it so.

Buffalo chicken bites- these are secretly healthy-ish, but keep that to yourself at the risk of not passing Test #2.

Mozzarella and prosciutto skewers-

Puppy chow- (which takes me straight back to my days in the Chi O house)

Mushroom and bacon dip-

Cookie dough dip- this is an incredible crowd hit. Service with animal or graham crackers.

No sort of party is complete without salsa and guacamole as well, in my opinion. It sort of pains me to not have any festive presentation able to peak through in this sort of party situation. Which is why I might sneak in a pepperoni pizza.... made like a football, naturally (It's pizza, they'll eat it).

Styling The Between Time (Beach Style)

Touche', Kate Spade. Doesn't she always say it right? Which is why I'd love to play dress up in a few of these outfits I haven't been able to get out of my (winter-is-almost-over-how-can-I-incorporate-spring-finally) thoughts lately. Here at the beach, the seasons seem to come a bit earlier than most places due to an easy, vacation-style mindset (we have "fake" winters anyway). So we're already shedding our dark colors and chunky knits, and it's time to play with a few unexpected combos before I finally lay to rest my fall/winter favorites and don my beloved sundresses and cut-offs come March. Cue the winter/spring combo. Some stylings I'd love to try:

Pops of pastels

Subtle shorts

Just her outfit, not his. Although I'd take him, too.

A lovely, longer skirt before pulling out the minis.

I don't really like surprises.
Don't get me wrong, I adore the unexpected. But here is the problem with surprises and myself: You just can't.
First, I am undeniably perceptive. I pick up on the teeniest of cues, subconscious included. Did you stutter, look down to your left, word something in a weird way? Done- I'm on to you.
And secondly, to say I'm curious is an understatement. I'll ask you ten questions in a row and if your answers don't suit me then fine, I'll find out a different way.
These two things are great for being a writer.
These two things are not great for being surprised.
Which is why I was so pleasantly surprised by the smallest of gestures this morning when I received a poem in my inbox from a sweet old friend, an old friend that knows me well enough to know that despite my style-obsessed musings, nothing quite inspires me like classic literature and art.
So here's to making your day a little prettier, with "smiles that win and tints that glow." Free of charge.

Tuesday Treats: Jill Stuart

Back in September, the first show I attended for Fashion Week was the stunning Spring 2012 collection for Jill Stuart and it was, by far, my favorite.
Clarification: It was my favorite line. My favorite show may or may not have been Perry Ellis because of those gorgeous models. Sorry I'm not sorry.
Back on track: Light pastels of silk and chiffon, pleats and cinched-waistlines, and some absolutely fierce disco-inspired heels proved that dressing like a lady is it for spring. Fast forward six months, and what do I stumble across during a daily blog perusing? The same gorgeous line in Jill's new ad campaign.

VIE Neck Candy

Have I ever told you I loved my job? Once or twice maybe... a day? Guilty.

It's true, I do. I love it. It is forever presenting me with new opportunities, challenging me to be better, smarter, and more able, fine-tuning my creative skills, and just plain making me happy.

For anyone that is confused right now, I work for The Idea Boutique, publisher of VIE magazine. (You better check out those links.) One of my favorite things about my lovely job is getting to discover up-and-com-ers. Whether it be fashion-related, music-related, art-related, or basically anything-related, VIE loves to feature those individuals who we just know are going to make it big. Which is what brings me here today: HeavyMetal Jewelry by Lauren Weiner.

She's only been designing jewelry since 2010, but it was then that this Nashville-based jewelry designer took apart her first piece with a pair of pliers and reconstructed it into a new masterpiece. The girl has got serious talent for designing one-of-a-kind, eclectic pieces from vintage jewelry. Her pieces are so eye-catching, in fact, that they'd instantly update the simplest of outfits into something super chic. A few of my faves:

Making Time to Become

I'm ignoring the fact that I haven't written here in over a month. I could give you all the reasons, but you really don't care. I'm here now, for good, and that's what matters.
I'm also ignoring the fact that I currently hate the design of my blog. Any graphic designers out there looking to do a pro-bono project? Or any anonymous donors wanting to fund the "Re-design From Ainsley, with Love" project? Didn't think so...

Anyway, lets get right to it. It's no secret that I'm addicted to self-improvement, am aggressive in making things happen, and, above all, am slightly cheesy. So brace yourself.
I've been doing some thinking.

Like most enlightening moments in my life, it started during a conversation with Mary Catherine. After discussing busy schedules, current inspirations, and future dreams (most people casually discuss these things every time they talk, right?), we stumbled into discussing time management, which, in case you didn't know, is my absolute worst attribute. We both have things on the agenda that we scheme up together, among other things, but can't seem to find an extra second to take the first step in getting there. Because of this, we both settled whole-heartedly on one statement:

I can visualize the woman I want to be, but its making time to get there that kills me.

There. I said it out loud. I don't feel like I'm failing, but I'm sure as heck having a hard time amidst the deadlines, bills, and daily responsibilities remembering who it is I'm trying to turn out to be. Which is, essentially, just someone who is living an inspiring life, discovering inspiring things and sharing them in as many creative outlets possible. We all have a future image of ourselves. People we want to be, ambitions, thing we see ourselves doing. There's the goal, so what to do amidst the crazy days to ensure the outcome is as you like? In true Nike style, just do it.

If you want to be a photographer, take photos.
If you want to be a musician, make music.
If you want to be a writer, write.
If you want to be a runner, run.
And make time to do it.

Invest your time wisely doing things that inspire and nurture what it is you want to be good at. That may mean getting up an hour early to make time for your devotional. Or, turning down happy hour to go for your run. Or, in my case today, devoting your Saturday to getting your blog back on track and lining up your posts for the week. Don't waste time. Commit yourself solely to your responsibilities and your dreams, and get rid of the two hours where Law and Order SVU sucks you in or laying in bed the extra hour just because. Just get up, and do it. Live it.

So I'm putting down the "My days are just so busy. I don't have time" excuse. If I don't make time, I'll look up in a few years and be severely disappointed that I'm not where I want to be. I have to admit, I'm a pretty lucky girl. I live in the most beautiful place on earth, working a dream job, with people that love me and inspiration around me on a daily basis. Focusing on that, I'm now saying No. More. Excuses.

We only get this life once. Regrets don't rest well on the soul, so I'd rather not have any. I saw this quote the other day, and immediately knew it was my new life motto.

"I'm going to make everything around me beautiful. That will be my life."

Monday Mantra (On Tuesday)

I absolutely forgot a Monday Mantra yesterday. My mind is all out of sorts since my team has so generously been given the week off until after New Years. So, yes, today is Tuesday, but we'll mantra it despite that. It's good for the soul.

Stay hungry, stay foolish. Keep a young, optimistic attitude with a fresh perspective to ensure maximum enjoyment of life. Carpe diem. Do what you love. Don't sweat the small stuff. Insert all available cliche's here (that are typically cliche because they're right), and they'll probably work together to tell you one thing: Stay hungry, stay foolish. Stay happy.

On the Agenda: NYE Attire

Praise the Lord (literally, praise Him) for the fabulous Christmas that was had at the Rogers' (no D) household this year. But seeing as Mother Anne is now sneaking down the Christmas decor, it's time to focus on the next event on the agenda. Which just so happens to be one of my absolute faves.
New. Year's. Eve.

If you've been with me the past year or so, you're well aware of my love for the holiday because of my affinity for all things celebratory and sparkly. And if you haven't, and you're one of those "New Year's Eve is overrated" pessimists, well, you may wanna stay away from me for the next few days (just kidding, never do that.)
But really, I love New Year's Eve for so many reasons. And I'm going to talk about it until, well, New Year's Eve.

Clearly one of the highest reasons on my list that I adore my beloved holiday is the opportunities for attire. Fur? Sur. Silk? Why not. Sequins? Absolutely. And (in case you've been living under a rock) there are some absolutely amazing after-Christmas sales happening as I type with ample opportunity to steal a fantastically festive NYE outfit for said night.
Well, thanks to my good 'ole friend Pinterest, I have a few ensembles in mind I"ll be scouring for during the next few days. I'll be spending my evening at a cocktail party at the beach, so a look that's equal parts easy and dressy is essential. Keep reading.

Sequined shorts paired with opaque black tights, booties, and a luxe silk top, make for an unconventional way to work sequins into NYE attire.

The same goes for a sequined mini. I'd like to try pairing with a sultry sweaty for a cozy-yet-dressy ensemble.

I'd love to be able to find a sequined geometric print... but I think that would be a belated Christmas miracle seeing how popular the trend is right now.

I wouldn't hate to stumble across a low-back beaded number at all. (!!!!)

I'm also keeping my eyes peeled for the perfect sequined blazer. With black shorts, a simple silk tank, and slightly undone hair, this piece gets a new look.

And if worse comes to worse and I don't find anything worth my purchase (guilty- I'm a picky, picky girl), then I'll be throwing on my black cigarette pants, a black silk camisole, and my new tuxedo jacket for a chic alternative, straight from my closet. That's right, here I am. Finally.

So thankful for His birth and the blessings He has bestowed on my life, family, and uh, all of mankind. This holiday season snuck up on me, to say the least, as a whirl of work, travel, and holidays parties descended. But it's not too late to wish a lovely Christmas to you and yours, from Ainsley (and Camp!).

As you've noticed, I've been in and out writing here this month. And there's a reason for that. Time was fleeting. With priorities devoted to the career I'm so fantastically inspired by, responsibilities that ensure my well-being, and cultivating and nurturing the relationships that keep me whole, daily hours began to dwindle like has never happened before. Because of this, I wrestled with the decision of whether or not stop writing on From Ainsley, with love at all, because in my mind, if I couldn't post fabulous inspirational original content daily, then I was a bad blogger. Because committing myself fully to a career, a social life, and taking care of myself and my responsibilities seemed to be filling up my hours, and if I had half an hour to blog clearly I should be doing something else. Right? But on my long ride from Florida to Mississippi just the other day, it dawned on me.

Lately, I've felt a little out of sorts. I've had a bit of a difficult time conjuring up the creative juices or focusing all the way through execution on many things during my daily schedule, blaming it on writers block or being stressed all along the way. I am me and and all I can be is the best version of that. But how to, exactly?

Then I was reminded of something I've always known, but lately forgotten: when I don't pour out the ideas and inspirations that fill my head daily, I block up. Writer's block, thinker's block, creative block. Having nothing similar to a filing cabinet system in my mind (but wouldn't that be lovely?), if the ideas/thoughts don't come out, they become impacted and I can't sort through them. That's why I originally started this little ole 'site, as a gathering ground for thoughts so I can think clearly, creatively, and uniquely throughout my day. Cue conscious: Ainsley, you owe it to yourself to write freely.

I'm sharing this with you, you wonderful readers who have stuck it out with me, because I don't think I'm a bad blogger anymore. I'm just a busy girl trying to navigate the confusing, challenging, often awkward post-grad years that Miss Ashlyn compared ever-so-accurately as the junior high years of adulthood (amen sister) with as much grace and success as possible. When we're making time for something we love, that reflects on all facets of our lives: our attitudes, our careers, our relationships, our outlook on life. So here I am, challenging myself to manage my time more efficiently (hello, New Years resolution), and share with you quality inspirations, thoughts, and original content the best that I can, as often as I can while still paying due diligence to the most important priorities in my life. Although it may not be daily, I hope you'll stick around for the upcoming year- it may get a bit personal, if that's alright. I just absolutely know I'm going to adore 2012. So follow your girl Ainsley right this minute and embark on 2012 avec moi.

I'm tres late with my mantra today. Forgive me, s'il vous plait. But alas, here it is:

Little secret for you. Sometimes, quite often actually, I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. I may venture into a new place, a new project, a new responsibility with utmost confidence, but am quickly reminded that each day, each moment is a learning lesson at this stage in life. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that when I think of all I don't know yet, I get a tad discouraged. It's times like these when its easy to hang your head, and I'll be honest in admitting that I've hung mine a few more times than normal recently. But you know what?
Some. Things. Take. Time.
It takes time to get to know someone. It takes time to do the job right. It takes time to change, and it takes time to learn.
It takes time to get the hang of it. (It = life at this stage of the game for yours truly.)
But we'll all get there as long as the chin is up, buttercup.

A Charming Giveaway

Today is the day. The day.

Isn't that just gorgeous? Excuse me while I stand on a soapbox for a moment. This glorious issue is back from the printer and hitting the streets (that's one of my fave magazine lingo phrases, btw.) I've never worked so hard on something in my life, and never felt so rewarded holding something in my hand. I'm fully aware of the digital presence in our world but, tell me, what's better than turning the glossy pages of a magazine with a cup of coffee in hand during some down time? Not much, I tell you.

Gift Guide: Stocking Stuffers

Everyone loves a good gift guide. And me? I love a good stocking stuffer. My stocking is the first thing I go for on Christmas morning, digging deep into my needlepointed stocking that hangs above the fireplace to pull out the little happies that I'll use year 'round. So whether you're looking for a few stocking stuffers to add to your own wishlist, or maybe just a small gift for a friend or co-worker, perhaps one of these items that are on my radar for the holiday season will do just the trick.

1. A new iPhone case. Who doesn't want their phone to be protected in these dots?

2. This fabulous cocktail ring. To adorn a naked left hand, perhaps?

3. These beautiful recovered vintage books would be great on any bookcase or stacked on a sidetable.

4. Much chicer than my business cards, these calling cards would be perfect for a cell and blog address. And don't you love the type font?

5. I've been looking around for a monogrammed catch-all tray for jewelry and such, and this one (in gray, yellow, and white for my preference) fits the bill perfectly. (Warning: may not actually fit in stocking.)

6. This J.Crew bangle. I'm a bangle girl (stacked all the way up my arm) and this one would add some punch to a gold or silver arm party.

7. Don't laugh at me, but I'm recently a huge fan of the Viva La Juicy super girly scent. I'm a scents girl- I like to mix it up on a daily basis, and this is just the scent for a sweet smelling day.

8. Another scent, but this time just a light dusting powder for after a shower or for a quick freshening up. This line is divine- my mom and I are both huge fans.

Hello darlings. After an unofficial break during the week of Thanksgiving, I'm back and ready for action. I actually had some Blogger issues and couldn't get into my site (tsk tsk), so I took that as a sign that I needed to rest my weary bones while off of work for a few days. The good news? Those weary bones helped finalize the winter issue of VIE, which will be back from the press on Wednesday. Yes, you heard me: Wednesday. So it's Friday again and my weekend is quickly filling up. It started last night with a precious champagne and food pairing event, and has escalated quickly to a busy day today as we wrap up editorial for the magazine and pack it all in for the weekend. On the agenda? My dad is coming in town, so we'll wine and dine, relax on the beach, while still squeezing in some outings with friends and another fun music event Sunday evening. I was playing around on my decor ideas Pinterest board a few weeks ago when I came across a pattern. It seems I'm anxious to try a new something in my home. Can you guess?

That's right. A gold-framed glass coffee table. These beauties somehow straddle the line between classic and modern chic, which is something my style really appreciates. And as I obtain new pieces of furniture and really begin to style a home, this coffee table would work interchangeably with lots of different color, style, and decor. I've been searching for one to add to the ole Christmas list, so if anyone can locate one that is less than $1200 (seriously), I'll adore you forever.

On My Radar: Holiday 2011

Now, I realize I may be a little premature in shopping around in the holiday sections of my favorite designers, but I've been listening to Christmas music for a few days now, so let's just go ahead and say 'tis the season.

The invitations will begin coming in any day now, so why wouldn't we start shopping around to put a few things on our radar before the mad dash to the cocktail dresses ensues? As always, these options are lots of class with a touch of sass. Follow the jump for my favorite options!

This Shoshanna dress is perfect dressed up with jewels or dressed down with black tights and booties for another occasion- take your pick.

I also adore this Elizabeth and James option for another dress up/dress down alternative.

For a slightly dressier affair, the Tibi beaded long strapless dress is just slouchy enough to be relaxed enough for a cocktail party.

And on the more reasonable priced end, this Anthropologie frock is to die for.

There are some days when I can't turn my brain off. I see image after image, idea after idea, that I have to get down somewhere, and that often don't align with a certain train of thought. And alot of the time, I just want to share- I can't help it, I'm a sharer. So guess what I did?

That's right, I went and started a Tumblr. This outlet allows me to post random thoughts and inspiration as opposed to the actual content I put together here (read: an actual thought). You'll also see more tidbits of daily life at the beach, working for VIE, and other aspects of my personal life. I don't know about you girls, but I get somewhat bored with my fall/winter wardrobe pretty quickly. I've always had a negative attitude towards it, relying on boots or a statement leather jackets a little too often when I'm in a crunch for a creative outfit. But after seeing a few subtle, chic, and unique pairings as of late, I'm feeling a little refreshed when it comes to styling myself on a daily basis.
A couple of pairings that I'd love to get my hands on:

This gold plated collar + casual wool jacket. Sleek hair and smoky eyes an added perk.

Lemon yellow frock + color-blocked shoes and bright blue bag. Fall neutral who?

Fur stole + champagne. It just seems appropriate.

Red lipstick + those amazing yellow pants.

A chic sequined shirt + slouchy sweater. Day to night at its best.

A crisp button down + trouser jeans and a classic tote/jacket/belt. Can't get much more classic.

A messy up-do + a sequined shouldered jacket (Olivia can do know wrong in my style book).

These weeks just keep getting shorter, my loves, but I won't complain that Friday is on our doorstep yet again. There's a nip in the air here finally, beckoning lots of wintry activities to take place on the weekend.

On my bucket list? Cozying up in the bookshop on the hunt for new winter reads (perhaps this, this, or this). Getting my hand on some chalkboard paint to try my hand at these. Putting on my new wool floppy hat and testing it out around town. Toss it all in with a few glasses of wine with friends, my first stab at a Pure Barre class, and a complimentary Paul Mitchell awapuhi wild ginger keratriplex treatment and blow out, and I've got myself a weekend, friends.

In each issue of the magazine, I'm the voice behind a little feature called "VIE's Favorite Things" that essentially has me seeking out things that steal our heart to show to our readers. So imagine my giddiness when I stumbled into Sheridan French.

Isn't she absolutely adorable? Besides being the author behind my newest blog crush, The Southern Eclectic, this model turned designer has an eye for prints that will make your heart flutter, and a line of handbags and clutches that will turn the plainest of outfits into an eye-catcher instantly.

Wish List: Most Wanted

November is unofficially the month of making Christmas lists. Am I right or am I right? I'm currently participating in No Shop November in order to save up for my seasonal gift-giving, so a wish list of sorts is naturally built as I see things that catch my eye. My most wanted for this season?
The Nikon 1 J1. Specifically with the two lens wide angle supplemental kit, but I wouldn't be picky seeing as that's getting a bit pricey.

Why? I'd really like to incorporate more original photography on this here little site as we continue to grow a bit more together. I do so many interesting things with the job I'm so lucky to have, and live in one of the most beautiful places in the whole world. Caring is sharing, and this would be an investment for my future, right? (how's that for a reason?)

Another something on my radar: the leather Tory Burch Reva flat in taupe.

Why? Because my black patent ones just officially bit the dust. Given, they lasted a solid four years, so I feel this is another solid investment. And taupe goes with everything.

I'm also on the hunt for a sleek, modern yet inexpensive writing desk and a new rug for my living room. The search for options is on.
Looks like I may have to give myself a few gifts this year...

Monday Mantra + More

Sometimes, when I'm feeling a little lost or undefined, I pop in Breakfast at Tiffany's. I'm not sure why, but Holly's undeniably cheery attitude and frivolous antics always leave me a little more secure. Girl was a confused little chick on lots of things life, but she had one thing dead on: she was the master of reinvention.

I say that in the most positive way possible. I don't support not being the you you were designed by Him to be. But sometimes, let's be honest, things about us that are innately" us" get us down.

Bad habits. Skeletons in the closet. Low self-confidence. Body image issues. We're all guilty- even the most self-assured of us can admit this. There's a lot of pressure on us girls today to be pretty, smart, graceful, and domestic, yet independent, career-driven power-houses. So what happens when you're just not?

Well, you can be. You just decide to be, and be it. Decide that you are, and you are. As I often say, (and you've heard me say it alot), you fake it 'til you make it. In a genuine way, of course, because underneath it all, we're simply striving to be who we want to be, who we know in our hearts that we are. Just remember this: "I will hold myself to a standard of grace, not perfection."

You shouldn't be perfect. But you should be absolutely true to who you want to be, through only His expectations of you.

Happy {Jam-Packed} Weekend

Hi lovelies. Friday again, can you believe it? What's your weekend looking like? I hope mine is a lot like this:

The weather here is still incredibly lovely- blue skies, crisp temps, and just the slightest nod to winter with an early, early sunset over the water.
My close friend and bride-to-be friend Kristie is in town scoping out ceremony and reception locations, so I'll be monopolizing as much of her time as is politely possible. I'll also be galavanting around this festival before grabbing a blanket to lay under the stars for this festival tomorrow. That is, of course, amongst making time for the Alabama vs. LSU game tomorrow night. I'm from the South- did you really think I was missing that? But clearly I'm rooting for Bama. I think that's pretty self-explanatory (sorry Tiger fans).
A few things on my radar for the weekend:

Super loving this idea for our tailgate party tomorrow. Or any party. Period.

Hi there November

I was putting together a post on neon and then I remembered it was November.
I'm not sure how the two correlate, but nonetheless, how is it seriously already November?

I'm quite pleased to see the beginning of a new month. I've been forced to think about change a lot lately, and how sometimes things don't end up being exactly what we thought they'd be. But this is good. And there is so much beauty in accepting change.
I've also been thinking about the decision to change. We make it every day. To order the cafe au lait instead of the skinny vanilla latte you've been ordering since Starbucks came to be. To paint your nails gray instead of your token red. Every time we make a different decision, it's accepting change and making the decision to change. And the smallest of changes can be momentous, because those small changes can add up to big change, even before you realize it. Think about that.

I'd rather my changes add up to something momentously positive, especially if I'm unaware that they are affecting me. And we all know I'm a self-improvement junkie (and if you don't, then you do now). So my November is unofficially the month of small changes. When I moved down here to the Emerald Coast, I decided I was going to become a "yes" girl in order to say no less and carpe diem more often, experience this new place to the fullest and dive into new friendships whole heartedly. It's been fantastic, to say the least, but this November it's time to say yes a little less often and make some time for positive me-changes. I'm so guilty of flying by the seat of my pants, staying on the go, and never sitting still long enough to pay attention to myself. So, small changes for November sounds like a plan.

Take care of myself in a healthier way.
Invest my little time in meaningful missions and not exclusively social situations.
Spend my hard-earned salary a little more wisely.
Take a daily breather to remember how lucky I am.

Happy {Finally It's Fall At the Beach} Weekend

I know everyone has been on a Fall kick for months, but here at the beach the temperatures have finally dipped below 80 degrees to a crisp 65 that calling everyone to bring out their boots, jackets, and autumn attitudes at last. The only thing we're missing are the leaves changing colors, but I guess that brilliant sunset directly over the water will have to do...

The much anticipated weekend is going to bring in a festive Fall beer-band-and-BBQ outdoor event, a little Fall shopping, and deciding and putting together my Halloween costume (which I still haven't settled on- ideas?)

A Little On Life, Love, and Joy

I struggled to decided whether to publish this post. I wrote it after being inspired by a moving devotional, and while I try to keep TMI of my personal life out of this blog, I've discussed this topic with more than a few people lately who feel the same way and my heart really tugged and tugged to put my thoughts for you to see. So, here's to hoping you enjoy. Back to regular scheduled programming tomorrow.

Life has been so good lately.

Really, so good.

I returned this week back from a sweet trip to Mississippi. Football, friends, and Mama’s cooking really made my month. These sweet simple pleasures really reminded me of something I think I’ve lost track of lately.

So much of my joy comes from the little things.

I’m a big picture person. I often look at goals and what it takes to get there, and am guilty for not always living one hundred percent in this moment. I like plans. I like lists. I like to accomplish, check off, put another notch on my belt, make progress. My big pictures are great and elaborate and rewarding. But my joy, that comes from the little things.

Mama’s southern vegetable lunch she had ready for me Sunday. My friends sweet smiles as I crack another cheesy joke (if you can call them a joke). Waking up and loving the work I get to do at my job that day. Writing a really great sentence (yes, I get excited about this). Walks on the beach with my dog. A great cup of coffee. “Good Job”s. Email chains from friends. “I miss you”s. This list could go on and on.

Every so often I find myself complaining about things: I’m homesick for Mississippi, I miss my friends, I don’t have enough money, I’m single, blah blah blah poor little Ainsley. I've spoken with lots of friends who lead wonderful lives and still are plagued with similar pessimistic thoughts. I’ve realized that when I get a case of the crabbies, it’s because I’m not focusing on my little joys. These little things, they are the ones that prompt me to thank Him for this life I live, this life I love so very much... and something I honestly should do more. A friend emailed me a sermon of sorts where a pastor discussed the “11 Things You Should Know By the Time You’re 25-ish”. After briefly discussing with said friend, we came to a conclusion: our lives are good.

“When you're 25-ish, you're old enough to know what kind of music you love, regardless of what your last boyfriend or roommate always used to play. You know how to walk in heels, how to tie a necktie, how to give a good toast at a wedding and how to make something for dinner. You don't have to think much about skin care, home ownership or your retirement plan. Your life can look a lot of different ways when you're 25: single, dating, engaged, married. You are working in dream jobs, pay-the-bills jobs and downright horrible jobs. You are young enough to believe that anything is possible, and you are old enough to make that belief a reality.” (This quote was followed with the 11 faith-based essential things you should know. If you’re interested in it, let me know and I can send it to you.)

Carried Bradshaw recently asked in a (re-run) episode of Sex in the City why, when things are good, we often concentrate on that one thing we don't have and let it ruin our joy? When we're missing one thing, whether it be a boyfriend, the perfect job, or anything else, why are we joy-ruiners when life really is so good?

I have a family that loves me, friends that adore me, a job I love to wake up for in a place where His beauty is obvious and everywhere, and a mind that is bursting with creativity and inspiration. Sure, I'm single and living very far away from most of my support system, but all the while learning to adjust to that and finding the joy in even those aspects. This is my season in life right now and I have to embrace that. I have simple joys every day that keep me bright-eyed, hopeful, and determined to be and live in a way that is both glorifying for Him and rewarding. That in itself should kick the crabbies in the butt when they overtake me. But it is a conscious effort to stay focused on joy and hope. My heart overflows with joy when I stay focused on my simple joys.

Late, late, late today but here I am nonetheless with my mantra for the week:

After a quick trip home to the great state of Mississippi this weekend (stories for tomorrow's post), I came back to my beach abode with a new appreciation of who I am because of where I came from. I've always believed that we all must live an intentional life, and an intentional life means one based on making decisions. Yes, deciding on your career or where to move or who to marry. But above all:
Deciding to be a good daughter. Deciding to be a good friend. Deciding to follow Him.
Deciding you will be authentic. Deciding you will be kind. Deciding you will always rise above.
Deciding what you stand for. Deciding what you expect. Decide what you will not compromise.
Deciding who you are.

Pumpkin Persuasion

I talk a lot about being Summer's girl (June baby all the way, of course). But let me tell you a little secret:
Don't tell Summer, but October at the beach may just be selling me a little on Fall.
The air is crisp but not exactly cold. The sky is the bluest of blue. And don't even get me started on how the sunset has moved to where it's directly over the water. Gorgeous. You really should get down here.
But really, I've always been a fan of October. For two main reasons, really.
1. Deeply rooted in years of ballet performances and a childhood spent with a really active imagination, I love nothing more than a good costume. Enter, Halloween parties. But that's another post for another day.
2. Pumpkin. I. Love. Pumpkin. Which brings me to today's post.
I love the smell. I love the color. I love the spicy and sweet taste it boasts. I especially love the little pumpkins that come in candy corn bags. Which, actually, may be a third addition to my "Why I Love October" list if we're getting down to business. Ok, so:
3. Candy Corn.
But back to pumpkin. Are you a fan? Because I'm about to sell you on loving pumpkin. Just look:
A chevron-carved pumpkin for your porch. Or your party. Or your centerpiece. How much cuter does the traditional pumpkin carving get? This may be going on my weekend's to-do list.

With all the leftover pumpkin from the activity above, how about a sweet pumpkin pie shake? (Perk: This recipe is from Cooking Light. Did you hear that? Light!)

Not a sweets person (weird)? Well are you a breakfast person? In that case, how about some pumpkin spice pancakes? Luckily, I'm a breakfast and a sweets person, so I get both.

Still not persuaded? Man, you're a stubborn one. Alright, let's try some pumpkin in our wardrobe. A classic blazer, perhaps?

Wish/Want/Need

Like, um, everyone, I'm ridiculously addicted to Pinterest. Like many, I have boards upon boards of foods, crafts, entertaining ideas, and I'll even own up to the wedding ideas pinboard (that's looking like it's going to come in use really soon since I'm, yep, single).
But the real reason behind my Pinterest addiction is, yes, you guessed it, fashion. Specifically, outfit inspiration. More specifically, I love to seek out the ridiculously well-dressed and copy their outfits, or at least translate it to be a little more me. See: my Style Seeker pinboard.
That being said, there are a few of these outfits I can't get off my mind today, as exampled by my gchat to MCK with the first picture below, coupled with a pleading request of "Help me find an ivory blazer so I can finish this outfit in my closet or I will absolutely die, pleeeeease"(yes, these things really happen with us). To make these happen, I need one key component for making them work.
Need: Fitted ivory blazer.

Need: slouchy, off-the-shoulder tee.

Need: a yellow (I have a similar purple, but I really want the yellow here), high-waisted mini.

Need: that jacket. Period. Or another similar statement jacket.

Need: Everything. I just really want this outfit. (I realize that's kind of cheating. And yes, I'm also aware I've posted this photo already.)

In a perfect world, clothes would be free. Or I'd have an unlimited shopping budget. So, readers and friends, if you can help me quench my obsessive desire to add a little to my closet, spill your secrets lovelies.

Happy {Autumn} Weekend

I use the word Autumn above loosely, since I'm not exactly seeing the tell-tale signs of changing leaves, smelling bonfires in the air, or even pulling out a cardigan yet. However, the temps are expected to drop to the seventies {gasp} here in Florida this weekend, and I plan on pretending exactly like all of the above are happening.

Don't be fooled, though. I still plan on soaking up the last few rays of warm sun on the beach. Summer girl tried and true.

Hot Color

It's no secret I'd eat peanut butter every day for a month in order to be able to make unrestricted additions to what I like to call my collection of clothes. Due to a few unforeseen expenses this month and the fact that I'm a post-grad who's still very much on a budget, I have to be smart about what I'm adding, making sure it's versatile, affordable, but with a worthy shock-factor and the potential to be a lasting trend.
Enter J.Crew (surprise, huh?)
While perusing their website last night, I was light-headed over their use of color with classic ensembles, leaving me lusting over a few more bold statement pieces in my wardrobe for fall and winter.

It seems I'm expecially drawn to red this fall. Adore the matching shoes and jacket with a crisp and classic pencil pant and striped blouse.

Hello yellow. Adore this entire ensemble.

I've said it too many times- I need a cape. Especially to wear with black skinnies and riding boots.

I woke up to this outfit on Padma Lakshmi on my blog roll and am really loving the siren red skinnies paired with a relaxed striped shirt. Perfect for a day of shopping, casual cocktails, or a movie date.

The nautical touch is reflective of my beach town while the red jeans are a real attention-getter. After a little research:

Tales of a Newbie at Fashion Week

After flying out at 6 am (that means airport at 4, eww), we arrived, checked in, and headed straight for our press passes before even touching a shower.

I personally promised many of you a recap. So for those who come here not caring so much about my personal life, you may want to skip over this post. Back to inspired content on Tuesday, promise. For those of you who have been urging me to fill you in, I can't show you everything. Because let's remember, I was in New York on behalf of VIE magazine, of which all photos except a few snapped on my phone belong to. But the good news? You can pick up the fashion issue of VIE later this Fall for every scrumptious little detail, including what is sure to be a lengthy column on my personal experiences, thoughts, and opinions from the week. So consider this a sneak peak:

The week started off shiny and covered in glitter- quite literally. We stifled our squeals upon seeing reality TV stars, celebrities from our favorite shows, and almost had a few full-blown meltdowns over Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Anna Wintour, Olivia Palermo (hello, I died), Sophia Bush, Emma Roberts, Kim Kardashian (that teeny tiny little thing), and a handful of other celebrities that were on our radar before we arrived. But long work days jaded us a little, and as each silver-screen darling strutted in to the lobby of Lincoln Center, we realized we'd quickly adapted to the daily grind of the routine.

Guess who's on that front row?

The shows? They're everything you'd hope. Bright white runways light up as models strut down towards an intimidating pit of photographers all vying for their money shot. They're as much about the performance of the show as they are the clothes the models are showing. (Secret: You should go ahead and get pretty excited for the J.Crew and Tory Burch spring collections.)

One thing someone should have taught me before I went was how to have my picture taken. Not in the real world sense of instruction, but in the fashion-obsessed sense of the phrase. Since street-style has become a phenomenon, bloggers, newspaper photographers, and tourist flock Lincoln Center from sunrise to well past sunset, waiting, camera-ready, for an outfit that catches their eye. Some ask you to stop for your photograph, while others follow you from the side or skip backwards in front of you click click clicking away to capture your outfit. One day a photographer followed me across the cross-walk snapping pics of my booties, camera aimed at my feet the entire time. Like, what? This I was not prepared for. Upon walking up to Lincoln Center the first day, Darby (my sidekick marketing assistant) and I were stopped and asked for our photograph. Not knowing why in the world this photographer wanted to take a picture of little ole us, we flung out arms around each other and grinned with big southern smiles, lowering our chin and looking up through our lashes just like our mamas taught us. Uh uh. Not the way to do it, girls. We quickly caught on to the one leg in front of the other, lower your bag to your side, turn slightly, and don't smile (ok, let's face it, I had to smile. My face doesn't not smile in front of a camera.) By day two, we were ready for those photographers again... although we never tired of laughing and wondering why in the world they wanted to photograph us.

Other snippets? People were nice. This southern drawl got us raised eyebrows and the infamous "Where are you guys from?" more often than not. But what also happened more often than not, was that we found our accents paired with a sweet smile was hard for people to turn down. We were granted access we shouldn't have been granted. We were invited places we weren't meant to be. We were taken backstage at shows, given free tickets, offered on-the-house food and champagne. Of course, the key to the whole scheme was pretending that we were absolutely deserving but also still absolutely grateful for these favors. Which we got pretty good at, if I do say so myself. Lesson learned: Mama was right, smiles and thank you's always go a long way

My favorite part? Outfit browsing. I came back completely inspired for how to pair my current closet staples and with an eye for what I'll be picking up this fall and spring to add in, which I'm excited to incorporate into some upcoming content to share with you. I packed for New York completely terrified of not being able to keep up with the sure-to-be fashionistas that would surround me at Lincoln Center. But I came back with a whole new persepective. People are genuinely appreciative of personal style, more so than a head-to-toe designer look or stuffy pre-paired ensemble. Personal style is a must- knowing how to freshly and uniquely pair items together, no matter the label or price tag, is what catches people's attention, not a straight from the runway outfit. Refreshing, yes? For me, absolutely.

Have I bored you yet? I hope not. I could share stories with you all day, and I"m sure they'll sneak in from time to time. The Comeback Kid

Hello lovelies.
I'm alive. Yes, I'm very much breathing and drinking an iced coffee right now. Surprised? I am a little, too. To say the last two weeks have been a whirlwind would be an understatement. A fabulous, ridiculously exhilarating whirlwind if you'd like me to clarify. But a whirlwind none-the-less.
So in case you were wondering where I've been, which I hope you have, I thought I'd do a quick two-week recap (not to be confused with my first fashion week experience recap, which is drafted up for tomorrow complete with pictures and ooey-gooey southerner-in-the-city stories).

I jetted off to New York two weeks ago where I was in the city for seven days, which may or may not have felt like an entire year. Remember how I promised to blog from location? Well, that was before I realized my schedule was going to be so jam-packed with shows, photo shoots, interviews, and lunch/coffee/dinner/cocktail dates that when I finally discovered a spare moment, I was much more inclined to elevate my poor sore feet and close my mascara'd eyes for a little rest.

Fast forward through the longest/best week of my life to arriving home late last Thursday evening to an inbox so over-run with PR requests and a puppy who missed me so very much that I never managed to hit the off switch. Friday ushered in not only a well-deserved weekend, but a little last minute family visit as well, where sunshine was the only thing on the agenda. But after feeding me more home-cooked meals than I've had in months, reality called them home and I was left to return to my "normal" schedule. Which I'm discovering may not be so normal after all.

Monday's schedule at the office:
Catch up on emails. Check
Press releases. Check.
Couple of conference calls. Check.
Magazine strategy meeting. Check.
Photo shoot coordination. Check.
Dinner in an Alys Beach villa with a private chef. Check.
Wait what? Yep, you heard me. I'm quickly realizing that this fabulous company and magazine I'm a part of is a far cry from your stereotypical business venture. Which is why during a photo shoot for an upcoming feature on Alys Beach, my publisher and mentor managed to treat the office to dinner with Chef Ed at the photo shoot location.

Darby and I, often referred to as the VIE PR girls, the Double Mint Twins, or our self-proclaimed favorite, the Dream Team.

Good times had all around that evening. Next up (and the next day), another photo shoot at Alys Beach, this time featuring the fabulous Spring 2012 bathing suit line from one of my very favorite up-and-comers, the Leona Collection. I don't want to show you too much, but here's a little sneak peak of what will be in the October issue of VIE:

No I'm not a model. Yes, my publisher can talk me into anything.

We finally wrapped the feature Tuesday night, and were able to spend Wednesday and Thursday in the office playing catch up all-around and trying to survive the constant demands of my inbox. Friday had us at a conference representing the magazine as official sponsors, which we managed to sneak out of a bit early at the gracious request of our boss to close the office early. Of course I never mind starting the weekend a little early...

So here I am. Back after an unofficial break. I missed you, so very much, and have so much bouncing around in my brain for you I really felt that a general unloading of these past few weeks was essential in order to move forward and back to regular scheduled programming. I hope you missed me. I'm so thankful for all your encouraging and curious emails, texts, Facebook posts, and all the other ways many of you tried to get in touch with me and gently tell me to get back to the drawing board. And it worked, because here I am. So I sincerely hope you'll keep stopping by regularly again!

I know this post was somewhat of a novel, but I'll close on this one little thought. As exhausted as I am, it is a rewarding exhaustion. When people ask me how things are going, my first response is always "Busy!". But this busy is the best busy I've ever known. And it's best summed up in a text message I got from my beloved bestie, MCK (let's be honest, you all know who that is by now) while she was in New York with Leona at market:

"In case you were wondering, we've got the lives we've always been envious of. xo."

I need to write that on my heart. Because when my schedule goes haywire and I realize I've forgotten to put the sheets on my bed before crashing into it or something of the like, I'm okay with exhaustion because it's from doing exactly what I want to be doing. For now, at least.

Style Inspiration: Fashion Week

Monday Mantra: Fashion Week Rambles

It's Fashion Week y'all.
So, in celebration of today, I have a few Monday Mantras for us to consider.
First, in regards to my shopping trip this past Labor Day weekend (For which we can blame Tropical Storm Lee, who ruined my beach weekend. And sales, hello. Albeit I didn't make any purchases that were actually on sale. Sorry, parents, if you're reading this- I'll be responsible again after fashion week).

The journalism/English major in me is appalled at the misuse of the word 'to'. But it's still a dang good quote.

I agree with this mantra whole-heartedly. Which is why I bought this leather and herringbone shift this weekend for my upcoming trip.

I also whole-heartedly believe this dress will assist me on my first fashion week in doing what my second mantra instructs.

Um, just noticed a typo in this one. 'Til does not equal 'till. Come on guys.

So now my bank account is frighteningly low, but it's fine, because...

... and because we always have to remember that

Why didn't I name this blog Confessions of a Clothes Addict? Another topic, another day. So here's to hoping one (Or all. Cough, me) of these mantras will get you through your week.

Happy {One More Summer} Weekend

Friday.
Did you exhale when you just read that? I did when I typed it. Don't be fooled- I love my job, it's exhilierating, it's creative chaos, and it's exactly why I love waking up each week day.
But Friday and I have been best friends for a long, long time. We're tight. Friday would be so upset if I wasn't excited to see it every week. Luckily, I am.
Although this Friday I greet with a little more hesitancy than most. Because it's the last Summer Friday.

Given, beach life ensures a summer feel to almost every day despite seasons or temperatures. But today unofficially marks the last weekend of summer as fall ushers itself in. And as a summer girl, albeit excited for the new fall fashions and football season, I can't help but be a little nostalgic towards my long days of summer already.

So this weekend is hereby proclaimed "The Last Days of Summer". Go ahead, take part. Wear your white sundress. Eat your last snow cone. Drink a daiquiri. Lay out. Go barefoot. Sport coral polish. Listen to Jimmy Buffet. Do summer, one more time. I'm going to, along with some friends arriving in a few hours for a weekend visit.
So Happy Last Summer Weekend, little lovelies, and Happy Labor Day. Have fun, be careful, and be grateful.

Summer's September

Oh what am I kidding myself. I'm totally playing Earth Wind and Fire.
(But I promise not to play it again on the 21st.)

Happy September, y'all. Any southern girl knows that as September arises, it does not mean summer is gone. No, no, the 90 + temps are here for about a month longer, which creates the constant struggle of combining your fall wardrobe with appropriate summer pieces to ensure maximum coolness in the balmy weather. Boots with dresses, chunky knits and shorts, the combinations are quirky and endless. The ocean in my backyard gives me a little leeway with the Rules of Fashion, as one can get away with breaking strict fashion rules a bit easier here (white jeans, why don't you stay a while longer...)

But do you know what September does mean? SEC Football, that's what (Hotty Toddy y'all). And as this is my first season to not live alongside or near my beloved Ole Miss Rebels, my Grove appearances will be few and far between. That's gonna break my little heart, so go ahead and prepare yourself for homesick rants from time to time, because there is no way these people here will convert me to Gators or Seminoles (gag).

And do you know what else September means? Fashion Week. But bless my heart, I'll be talking about that enough between now and next Friday that I'll spare you today. Prepare yourself.

Fashion Rants: Fur for Fall

Happy {Anticipatory} Weekend

Good news darlings, the weekend has finally arrived! Even better news is that VIE's Home and Garden issue went to press today! This new issue really is quite lovely, and I'll be sharing the online version of the magazine with you just as soon as the real thing is back from the printer (along with the sense of pride for all our blood, sweat, and tears). But the best news, perhaps, is that it is just a little over a week until I pack my bags to jet off to New York for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week's Spring 2012 shows!

Words can't explain my excitement, so I won't even try. However, panic is a good word to describe how I feel when thinking about my wardrobe for that week. See and be seen, correct? We all know I'd rather shop than eat. But that's another post for another day. One thing is for sure: there is a lot on the agenda for this little blog.

So off you go, little lovelies, into a weekend that is hopefully filled with delightful fun and just the right amount of R & R to get you going for next week.

New Addition: Lucite Love

Sorry I missed you yesterday. As we're getting ready to go to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for the Spring 2012 lines, things are getting a little crazy trying to prepare for that, get the magazine to press by Friday, and take care of all our other office to-do's. My apologies, darlings.
Moving on. As a post-grad with an eye for design, my new home is coming together slowly but surely. Most of the pieces in my home are hand-me-downs or second-hand refurbished items I've tackled as a DIY. However, I'm keen on adding tiny personal touches here and there (as my budget grows) that exude my taste. One of the first things I knew I wanted to add was a lucite chair to my vanity (who's chair needed replacing anyway).

Given, most of the images above use a lucite chair as a desk chair, but that doesn't seem very cozy to work in now does it? But I'm still so drawn to lucite, (and perhaps a little late to the train on this) and thought one would work perfectly at my vanity. It's fresh and modern without being too in-your-face, and works well with both timeless and trendy pieces. I found this one for what is an absolute steal on eBay (seriously, go check it out) and, after some encouragement and validation that it was a must have from my other half, bought it right up for said vanity.

It should be arriving any day now. Next on the home to-do: split my spare bedroom into an office/guest room!

Sometimes I stumble upon a mantra for our Monday mornings so perfect that it literally lights up my day. This is the case with the one above. You see, I'm not short on dreams. Those who know me can attest to the fact that I'm always making big plans, concocting ideas and strategies, deciding who I want to be and what I want to do, and daydreaming about that since quite a young age. This year, though, brought upon the realization that perfection and having it all together isn't just unattainable, but it's no fun. I've been practicing living simply and happily in the moment. But contentment here and now doesn't have to be traded in for dreaming and scheming. So don't be afraid to dream a bit bigger. Celebrate that. Darling.

Fall Fur

I'm a summer girl. It's no secret I'm a June baby and detest January as much as I detest scratchy sweaters that make you look ten pounds larger. But Fall, Fall I can do. Fall I like. Subtle hints at cooler (not cold) weather attire while still being able to wear clothes that actually give you a shape (you can't have one of those all bulked up for the 30 degree weather in Winter)-- that I can actually look forward to. I can also look forward to boots and leather jackets, two items that will always be among my Top Five Favorite Things To Wear (along with nudge wedges, a flattering LBD, and ankle-length super skinnies). So naturally, I've been perusing for my Fall wardrobe a lot lately. And I've noticed... all i want is fur.

Not being much of a contest girl, due to my terrible luck, I literally gasped when I saw this. DIY Decor: A Painted Rug

I need your help.
I know it is only Tuesday, but I have a major DIY project on my radar for the weekend.
Drum roll please.
I'm going to paint my living room rug.
Ok ok, I know it doesn't sound like that huge of a project. But we're talking about me, the girl who has no patience. And the decor perfectionist.
But it's just time for this project. Why? Due to the new addition into my household (ahem, my little goldendoodle Camp), I figured it wasn't quite time to invest in a new rug of choice. So I threw this old Pottery Barn rug of my mom's down thinking it would do until the pup grew up a little and I could move a more decor-friendly one in.

Well, it isn't quite cutting it. So, to jazz things up a bit, I'm considering painting it. I've been looking up tutorials from other bloggers who have taken on the task, and have found lots of great tips for making my painted rug work wonderfully. But now, for the pattern. I'm thinking....

... a version like this, with white and dove gray stripes. Or,

a more eclectic pattern, such as this, with the original linen color and perhaps navy or again, gray (this blogger also has a great tutorial. Follow the link). Or lastly,

a more geometric print, in exactly the colors seen here.
Right now, I am leaning towards the stripe, because quite frankly, it seems the simplest. However, I have chevron pillows on my couch, so I'm worried it will be a little too much zig for my zag if you follow. I know this project is going to take a significant amount of time, and while it isn't high in price, I'm still hoping to replace it with this rug from West Elm soon.

But what are your opinions? Are painted rugs something you would try your hand at? And if so, would you invest more time and effort in doing one of the more intricate designs, or settle for the classic stripe since you know it is going to be replaced soon anyway (and is the chevron an issue here)? Which is your favorite, or do you have a different idea all around? I'd adore your feedback, so let your opinions flow to help me decide!

Monday Mantra

This business of loving fashion, style, and all the things you and I are so passionate about is a tricky business from time to time. It is a daily task for me to make sure that the inspiring images that fuel my imagination and creativity don't dually allow the green monster to snarl its ugly head, or create an unattractive lust in my heart for the things or appearances that I want right now. Sometimes it is the basics, such as the verse above, that keep me grounded in knowing that the things that really matter are already within, and they don't cost a cent.

Happy {Free} Weekend

This is how I feel.

We're on our home stretch getting the magazine to the printers, and as deadlines have controlled my week, I'm more than ready for the freedom ahead the weekend is ushering in. With my last batch of visitors in town before summer comes to a close, I plan on spending my time reading this, finally seeing this, sipping on this, and hopefully fitting a little time in for dinner here.

Confessions of a Book Nerd

It's no secret that I'm a Fitzgerald fanatic. Seriously, I'm so overcome with love for Fitzgerald in every form that I considered named my dog both Gatsby and Fitz. So if you, too, are a lover of Gatsby, of Zelda and Fitz's turbulent, romantic and chaotic lifestyle, or ole Fitzgerald's lyrical words themselves, heed my oncoming advice with utmost seriousness (ready for it?) :

Go and buy The Paris Wife by Paula McLain.

Right now.

(And try to savor it, and not devour it as I did.)

This novel details the life of Ernest Hemingway and his lovely first wife, Hadley Richardson. A marriage based on love at first sight, breathless romance, and total infatuation quickly evolves as the couple takes off for Paris during the jazz age to befriend the likes of Ezra Pound, James Joyce, and the Fitzgeralds themselves while encountering scandal, infidelity, and the chaotic undertones of the era. While fictional in tone and attitude, McClain's writing depicts every aspect of the Hemingways lives, taking details from real-life love letters, biographies, and Hemingway's own work to paint a canvas that spans six years and then some from Hadley's perspective. And don't even get me started on her beautiful language, which is pure art in itself.

I can not say enough how much I loved this novel. I actually forced it on my friend Michelle, who shares the same taste as me, knowing that she'd tell me if my opinion of this book was a little biased.
She finished it in a day and a half.

I suggest buying the hard cover copy, seeing as you're going to want to re-read it 1,231 times and don't want it to get ratty. Plus, it's a lovely cover on a bookshelf.

As I mentioned Friday, I'm on the hunt for my fall wardrobe, looking for great pieces that translate easily from work to play. One thing that's on my radar is pretty blouses for a tucked in, polished look that can be flirty and girly...

Happy {Fall Shopping} Weekend

And here we are again, with the weekend on the horizon. I pushed my pencil skirts to the side this morning in lieu of rolled up boyfriend jeans with a pretty silk top, statement necklace, and chunky wooden heels. Our office attire is "beach chic", so as the weather channel tells me that clouds are on my horizon all weekend, I'm hoping to spend some time on the hunt for fall finds to add to my wardrobe. And even though an Indian summer is most surely in our future here on the coast, you have to start early to find the things you want for fall! On my radar? A brown leather skirt. Cropped cigarette pants. A cape coat. A fur vest. Long sleeve silk tops. And I need new shoes. Got any ideas/suggestions for me? Leave a comment!

Seeing that if I happened to have the extra $2950 laying around that would purchase me this uber-fabulous lucite trunk by Serge de Troyer, I would probably opt to spend it on clothes, a vacation, or obsessive amounts of candy/chocolate/fro-yo, I have a proposition to make.

How about designing a much less expensive but just as chic replica of the glam piece? And decoristas worldwide would continue to kiss the ground you walk on.

I was browsing through some of my daily reads today and stumbled across this outfit post on M Loves M that I happened to miss:

I'm a big fan of the adorable Mara, as she documents her life as a new wife on her blog. She's cute, creative, and has a knack for making what's old new again. I find lots of fun and functional ideas in her outfit posts, and this one above literally stopped me in my mouse-scrolling tracks.

Hello Audrey Hepburn meets bombshell. The classy meets sexy look is hard to pull off equally (obviously making it my favorite combo). Don't you love the demure jacket and chiffon shirt coupled with the metallic gladiator heels and siren-red lips? Because I do. So much, in fact, that I went on a little internet binge to see how I could add a similar look for fall to my closet. Behold:

The Reason

DKNY's PR girl (who if you don't read, you absolutely should) is onto something here. I sit here daily and talk with you about style. I'm sure some who know what I do as a blogger, or what we all do as blog readers, don't understand our devoted interest to the topic. I'm sure some don't understand how we can roll out of the bed and spend happy, meticulous time piecing together this skirt with that blouse and those heels/necklace/earrings/blazer/sunglasses. But we know why. It makes us feel good. And no, we aren't being shallow.

When I walk into my office and I'm put together nicely and I know it, watch out day, I'm getting stuff done. I'm going to get that publicity. I'm going to write that article. I'm going to network effectively and build strong relationships. I'm going to voice some killer ideas. Because I've got confidence on my side and those new shoes I just found online for a steal that I absolutely had to have because they went together so nicely with my new cropped cigarette pants helped me get it.

My friends and I tease that our motto is "Fake it 'til you make it." But it's so true. Bad day? Fake a good one. It will make it get better. And if you're wearing a ratty pair of jeans and a tank that should have been thrown out years ago, my guess is you're not going to feel much like "making it." But if you're as put together as a J.Crew ad (or whatever your personal taste may be), my other guess is you're going to know it, be happy about that, and perform better in whatever setting you're in. When you care about your appearance, it translates into caring about your work. If style is about expressing yourself, what does the outfit you're wearing out today say about you? Your look translates your first impression for others. And no, I don't think we should judge books by covers. But I mean, if the covers are nice, it's a heck of a lot easier to be drawn to them.

So that's it, that's why I love fashion. I'll get off my soapbox now. I have some shoes on a Wishlist online anyhow that I need to go sort through, and an article or three to write.

A little late in the day due to a photo shoot and a celebratory lunch date, but here's to wishing you all a lovely, relaxing yet exciting weekend with a few days off from the habits and schedules that often bind us during the work week. On my agenda: tapas and red wine with old friends, an afternoon lounging on the sugar sands of the Gulf, a quick trip to the farmer's market, and finally starting this book.
